Located on the River Isar in southern Bavaria, Munich, Germany, is famous for its beautiful architecture, fine culture and the annual Oktoberfest celebration. The capital of Bavaria, Munich is home to over 1.4 million people, making it the third largest city in Germany. The year 1158 is the earliest date the city is mentioned in a document, and it is assumed to be its foundation date.

Although the city was heavily damaged from bombings during World War II, many of its historic buildings have been rebuilt, and the city center appears mostly as it did in the late 1800s. The Frauenkirche, a church that serves as the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Munich and Fresising and seat of its archbishop, is located in the city center. It is considered to be a symbol of Munich and is its most famous landmark. Munich is also known for its palaces, including Nymphenburg, which was the summer residence of the Bavarian monarchs, and the Residenz, which was once the city castle of Bavarian dukes, princes and emperors. Munich is also home to one of the world’s largest urban public parks, the 900-acre Englische Garten, which is close to the city center. The park may be best known for its four beer gardens—outdoor areas in which beer, other drinks and local food are served. It also offers 48.5 miles of paths along brooks and ponds, as well as a nudist area. The world’s largest fair, Oktoberfest is a 16-day festival held annually in Munich, running from late September to the first weekend in October. More than 6 million people from around the world attend the event. The first Oktoberfest was held to honor the marriage of Prince Ludwig and Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in 1810. Now a celebration of Bavarian traditions, Oktoberfest is, of course, well known for its beer. The only beers allowed at the Munich festival are those brewed within the city limits. The festival also offers parades, concerts and traditional Bavarian food.
