This beautifully detailed German advent calendar depicts an enchanting winter landscape with traditional German architecture. Skiers coast down the hillside while children have snowball fights and villagers go for a stroll.
Umgebindehäuser houses are shown on this calendar. These traditional dwellings are crafted in a unique architectural style that combines block, half-timbered and solid construction. Today, these style houses can be found in Lower Silesia, over Upper Lusatia and Northern Bohemia to the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. According to estimates, there are still approximately 19,000 of these preserved houses in the "Umgebindeland", of which more than 6,000 in Upper Lusatia alone.
The detailed picture has 24 little doors to open. Each door has a little picture behind it. The tradition is to open one door each day from December 1 thru December 24. Children love to open a door a day as they count down to Christmas.
Tradition of the Advent Calendar
The tradition of the advent calendar dates back to 1851 in the Protestant parts of Germany. The first advent calendar with little doors was printed in the early 1900's and continues today.
