Product Description
Christmas Market in Forest Advent Calendar
A village of gnomes and woodland critters celebrate Christmas visiting tiny Christmas market stalls filled with sweets, toys and roasted nuts on this German paper advent calendar. The cozy gnome houses are constructed out of an old tree stump. Angels and Santa shower the forest with holiday treats, toys and songs adding to the festive atmosphere.
Fritz Baumgarten, a prolific illustrator of German children's books, originally drew this charming scene. His work first appeared on Advent Calendars in the 1950's and he has become one of the classics.
The detailed picture has 24 little doors to open. Each door has a little picture behind it. The tradition is to open one door each day from December 1 thru December 24. Children love to open a door a day as they count down to Christmas.
Tradition of the Advent Calendar
The tradition of the advent calendar dates back to 1851 in the Protestant parts of Germany. The first advent calendar with little doors was printed in the early 1900's and continues today.
