This hand-painted Cherusker stein refers to the "Cherusci", an early German tribe. The scene depicted is a well-known Peter Duemler motif showing Hermann (also know as Hermann the German), a Cheruscan war lord, eloping with his bride Thusnelda following his victory over the Roman legions at the battle of Teutoburg Forest in 9 AD. Pewter relief conical lid.
