Product Description
This beer stein depicts Bavarian hunters regaling the day's hunt and relaxing in an alpine hut. The text on the front "Widerer in der Sennhütte" translates as "Poachers in the alpine hut", however this is not the poaching we have outlawed today, rather a kind of "Robin Hood" act.
The History of the Widerer in der Sennhütte
In the 18th century only the aristocracy were allowed to hunt as show of their ownership/control of the land. A reform of the existing hunting law was passed after a revolution, however was a great disappointment to the people. The law stated that to hunt one must pay a fee which only the rulers and bourgeoisie could afford, therefore poaching was respected among the people who worked and lived on the land.
The text on the sides read "Bei Bier u.(nd) Scherz bleibt froh das Herz" which translates as: "Beer and jest keep the heart happy". The sides feature chalets in the alps, most likely a safe refuge for the hunter/poacher.
